"As ancient Egyptian rulers, pharaohs were both the heads of state and the religious leaders of their people," explains a National Geographic article. "As the religious leader of the Egyptians, the pharaoh was considered the divine intermediary between the gods and Egyptians. Maintaining religious harmony and participating in ceremonies were part of the pharaoh’s role as head of the religion. As a statesman, the pharaoh made laws, waged war, collected taxes, and oversaw all the land in Egypt (which was owned by the pharaoh)."

Isaiah 52: [4] For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.
[5] Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.
[6] Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.
"Notice the Pharaoh who's going to oppress Israel in Exodus 1 is not an Egyptian; he's an Assyrian," explains Richard Jordan. "The Assyrian is a type and a picture of the Antichrist in the Prophets and he's back here in Exodus. What's going on back with Moses and Pharaoh is a spiritual battle.
Exodus 12:12: [12] For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
"He's not just fighting the Egyptians; He's fighting the gods of the Egyptians. The ten plagues against Egypt are not just things that came out of the air. Those were specifically aimed at and a direct assault on the individual satanic pagan gods the Egyptians worshipped.
"He literally is combatting a satanic force in Egypt that now is being led by a usurper to the Egyptian throne who has come in there, because now he's going to seek to oppress the nation Israel and destroy them and hold them captive.
"The Lord knows that Pharaoh is not just an ornery old coot; He knows there's a spiritual battle going on and He knows that those in the spiritual battle are never going to give in and submit and agree to do what He tells them to do."
